Youth is an Asset

“I am still young, losing this amount of money does not really bother me, I can easily earn this back through hard work.” The writer believes most people heard this during the hot market back in August 2020, where newer and younger investors love to say this as they would not like to miss the chance to earn more. They would much prefer “go big or go home” mentality, like all in a single counter, trading very frequently or so.

However, is that true that youngster should care less about losing money and grab any chances even though the risk is there? The answer should be a solid no. Every single cent that you earned and invested in the market still came from hard work. Hence, making this statement is like throwing your money into the sea and saying that you can earn back that amount of money, might as well leave it then. Young investors with this mentality should really be hit with a reality check. Yes, your job may have a high salary, but that does not deny the fact that you are spending this money in a wrong way.

We all know that if we bought a share at RM1.00, and it dropped to RM0.50, it will be a 50% loss. However, we will need to earn 100% in order to make RM0.50 back to RM1.00, that’s twice the difficulty of earning money than losing money. Let say you really have this mentality and you have RM10k initially, loss all your money within a year, and fortunately, earned back this Rm10k two years later. You may be proud that you are able to recover from absolutely nothing to your initial money, but it does not deny the fact that you lost 3 years, and in this 3 years, you gained literally nothing and all your hard work has gone to recovering your losses. Frankly speaking, even interest from fixed deposit did better return that your portfolio.

In short, no matter how young you are, manage your risk properly. There is no need to risk everything in order to earn money. There are two things that need to be captured from this, one of it is from Warren Buffett that is his rule number one, do not lose money. The second thing is that investment is not about high risk high reward, but to have high reward at much lower risk.
